Exclude internal traffic from statistics

One step to improve the quality of our analytics data is to filter out internal website traffic. Filters based on IP address are not effective anymore, because of many people working from home and anonymized IP addresses. That's why we built a cookie-based solution.

Based on the cookie information, internal traffic is tracked in a different Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property. In that way we are able to see how much traffic shifts to the internal users report. And events from testing forms doesn’t influence the conversion metrics anymore.

Targeting pixels / tags like the LinkedIn Insight tag are not integrated into the websites when the cookie is set. That mean that less internal users will be included in audiences used for ad targeting and you can spend your budget more efficiently.

Following integrations are currently treated different:

  • Google Analytics (UA) -> internal traffic is excluded in “Production” views
  • GA4 -> tracking in a different property
  • Microsoft Clarity -> blocked
  • LinkedIn tags and conversion events -> blocked
  • Facebook / Meta tags and conversion events -> blocked

Internal traffic banner

You will see an internal traffic banner on the bottom left hand side of the web page if the cookie was set correctly:

Please click on one or all of the following links to set the cookie in your browser(s). Currently there is no option to set this cookie for all websites at once. If you are frequently visiting different local websites, please click on these links as well:

We're tracking internal traffic in a separate GA4 property. If you want to test the conversion tracking, you can find it there. Send a message to shanil.gannoo@sdworx.com, if you need access.
The cookie is set for a duration of 1 year.
