When do I need to create a pillar page?

As you may have read on one of the following articles, a pillar page is used to group blogs, publications (whitepapers, guides, e-books, research) and eventually tools, events around a specifc topic in order to attract more traffic through SEO to these assets.

  1. Is there already a pillar page which covers the topic of the new asset?
    1. Yes, then you don't need to create an additional one, mainly if you know that it will take between 3 and 6 months to see the first effects of a pillar page on your ranking/SEO traffic.
    2. Yes partially, you need to see if there are other assets covering exactly the same topic as your new assets. If they are more than 4, then it may be worth to create a specific page and move the other assets to the new pillar page. If you do, you have to take 2 important aspects into account:
      1. Don't forget to create 301 redirects between the old and the new URLs
      2. As a pillar page has mainly effect on SEO, it's important that the name of the pillar page is defined from a customer problematic point of view. Using internal jargon makes no sense. Having a look at the results of your SEA campaigns to find the perfect name may be a good idea.
    3. No, then you might need to create a new pillar page. As a pillar page has mainly effect on SEO, it's important that the name of the pillar page is defined from a customer problematic point of view. Using an internal jargon makes no sense. Having a look at the results of your SEA campaigns to find the perfect name may be a good idea.
